- Permeable.
- Lightweight.
- Easy to install.
Why Use Weed Membrane Under Artificial Grass?
Although artificial grass blocks sunlight, weeds can still grow from below if proper ground preparation is not completed.
Installing weed membrane helps:
- Prevent unwanted weed growth
- Create separation between soil and sub-base
- Improve long-term lawn stability
- Maintain effective drainage
- Reduce maintenance over time
For best results, membrane should be installed before laying your sub-base.

Where Should Weed Membrane Be Installed?
Layer 1 – Over Soil (Recommended)
Install directly onto the excavated soil before laying MOT Type 1 sub-base. This is the most common and effective method.
Layer 2 – Beneath Artificial Grass (Optional)
Some installers add a second layer between sub-base and grass for additional weed protection.
For most residential projects, a single layer beneath the sub-base is sufficient.
How Much Weed Membrane Do I Need?
Allow for:
- Minimum 200mm overlap at joins
- Full edge coverage
- Small trimming allowance
We recommend ordering approximately 10% extra to allow for overlaps and cutting.
Example:
If installing 45m² of artificial grass, purchase 50m² or slightly more to ensure full coverage.
Is 70gsm Membrane Strong Enough?
Yes. 70gsm non-woven membrane is ideal for standard domestic artificial grass projects.
For trade or heavy-duty commercial applications, a thicker membrane may be preferred.
