How Do I Clean Artificial Grass? Artificial Super Grass

How Do I Clean Artificial Grass?

One of the most common questions we get asked here at Artificial Super Grass is “how do I clean artificial grass?”. We all know that it is a low-maintenance landscaping material but, it does require regular cleaning to keep it looking its best, so we decided to put together this complete guide to help you maintain it throughout the seasons.

In this artificial grass cleaning guide, we’ll provide detailed information on the various cleaning products available, including costs, along with top tips on how to remove stubborn stains and unpleasant odours.

The Difference Between No Maintenance & Low Maintenance

If you are thinking about installing artificial grass in Thorne, then we’re guessing that you have already heard about its long list of benefits, but we would like to stress that it is low-maintenance and not no maintenance. It is a common misconception that it is maintenance-free, and while many retailers would like you to believe this, it is simply not true.

Unlike real grass, synthetic turf doesn’t require watering, weeding, fertilizing or mowing, so you won’t have to spend hours gardening at the weekends. But, like all other landscaping solutions such as wooden decking, paving, and tiles, it does require a certain amount of maintenance to keep it looking as good as the day you installed it, with cleaning being the most important thing of all.

When you invest in superior synthetic grass, you are investing in something that will change your life for the better. You’ll add value to your property, you’ll be able to spend more time outdoors, and you’ll save money on your utility bills, but best of all, you’ll save time, and that’s something we all need. Artificial turf needs little in terms of maintenance, and if you stay on top of weekly and monthly tasks, you’ll never need to spend more than 10-minutes sprucing up your evergreen lawn.

Artificial Grass Cleaning: Weekly Tasks

We recommend that you check on your artificial grass weekly to keep it looking like new. If you have flowering plants and trees in your garden, regular raking (with a synthetic-rake) to remove pet hair, fallen leaves, and petals is essential. This kind of debris can cause all manner of problems with the drainage system of your turf, and if the drainage holes become blocked, you could end up with waterlogging.

If you have a large garden with several trees, you could save time by investing in a leaf blower. They are relatively inexpensive, costing as little as £40, and they make light work of time-consuming jobs, especially during autumn when falling leaves can create a carpet on top of your imitation lawn.

During the summer months, you might want to hose-down your fake grass once per week to remove pollen. You'll find that this is particularly beneficial to those with hay fever, asthma, and other plant allergens, and ideal for those with dogs that may pee in the garden occasionally.

Cleaning Artificial Grass: Monthly Tasks

It is good practice to clean your artificial grass one per month. You can do this with an artificial-grass cleaning product, or you can make a homemade solution with equal amounts of white vinegar and water. While the latter is the cheapest option, the smell of vinegar and be quite off-putting, particularly to sensitive pets, and so a shop-bought product, specifically designed for the job, might be the best option. We’ve listed more information on the different astroturf cleaning products available below.

Whichever artificial grass cleaner you decide to use, you should spray it liberally all over your debris-free lawn, and leave it to work its magic for a few minutes before rinsing it thoroughly with water. Regular cleaning will not only remove surface dust, but it will leave your synthetic lawn smelling fresh and ready for another month of entertaining.

In addition to monthly cleaning, we recommend brushing your artificial grass at least once per month, using either a stiff synthetic brush or a power brush. By doing this, you will raise the pile and give your lawn a freshly manicured look. If during the summer months, you are walking on your synthetic grass daily, you should brush it more often, at least once per week to prevent it from looking flat.

The Best Artificial Grass Cleaning Products

There are many different artificial grass cleaning products on the market, but which one should you use? Here we list two best-sellers, based on performance, price, and value for money:

Pro-Kleen Artificial Grass Cleaner - £17.99 for 5L Concentrated Formula

Made by one of the UK’s leading cleaning product manufacturers, Pro-Kleen Artificial Grass Cleaner is a three-in-one solution that cleans, disinfects, and deodorises. Recommended for those with dogs, it is 100% pet-friendly once dry, and it is highly effective at eliminating unpleasant odours caused by dog urine. Suitable for use on all synthetic landscaping products, this best-selling artificial grass cleaner features a moss-killing ingredient to prevent moss growth, and it comes in three uplifting fragrances including cut grass, floral, and lavender.

As a super-concentrated product, a single 5L bottle of Pro-Kleen Astroturf Cleaner provides 15L of detergent when mixed with water, making it great value for gardens big and small.

Ecofective® Artificial Grass Cleaner – £15.49 for 1.5L Concentrated Formula

Ecofective® is ideal for those looking for an eco-friendly artificial grass cleaning product. Made from natural active ingredients, it uses probiotics to cleanse and disinfect synthetic grass and, it has a fantastic freshly-cut grass fragrance that will leave your artificial lawn looking and smelling just as good as the real thing. It is highly effective at removing dust, grease, and pet odours, and as it leaves millions of micro-organisms on the turf fibres that ‘feed off’ dirt, it has a long-lasting effect.

Ecofective® artificial grass cleaner is safe to use around children and pets, and it is even safe for any bees that may visit plants in your garden. With no harsh chemicals, it is the smart choice for family gardens and the kinder choice for the environment, making it a great all-rounder when it comes to fake grass cleaning.

How To Remove Stains From Artificial Grass

You will inevitably get the odd stain on your artificial lawn if you use it to entertain, and you should treat these stains much the same as you would a carpet stain. The earlier you act, the easier stains are to remove, so we recommend blotting them straight away with a wet cloth or paper towel, using a water/vinegar solution or a spot of artificial grass cleaner if necessary. Avoid rubbing as this can damage the fibres. Blot, rinse and repeat until you have completely removed the stain.

You can use a soft toothbrush on stubborn stains to gently remove them from the turf. In the case of oily stains, a mild soap and water solution could be the most effective. You can use a tiny amount of washing up liquid or hand soap diluted in water, but make sure you use a natural, eco-friendly product free from bleach and harsh chemicals.

How To Keep Artificial Grass Odour-Free

We all love our dogs, but if yours use your artificial lawn as a toilet, you will need to carry out a regular pet-patrol to keep it looking and smelling its best. Remove any solid waste immediately using a pooper-scooper or dog waste bag, and rinse the spot with your preferred artificial grass cleaning product to remove any traces left behind and the unpleasant odours that they can create.

If professionally installed with the right amount of sub-base material and weed membranes, artificial grass is very pet-friendly, and your dogs can safely pee on your synthetic lawn but, it shouldn’t be their main toilet. Most dogs tend to pee on the same spot, and this can lead to urine odours if not cleaned regularly, so try to stay on top of their antics, and spray the areas they use with detergent to keep bacteria at bay.

Removing Snow and Ice From Artificial Grass

We don’t get vast amounts of snow in Thorne, but icy mornings are not uncommon during the winter months. Modern artificial grass can easily cope with snow and ice, and the best thing to do is leave it to take care of itself, but if you would like to remove snow from your garden, you can do so with a stiff brush or plastic shovel. If using a shovel, take great care not to dig too deep as this could damage the fibres or even rip the astroturf. Gently remove the snow layer by layer, and avoid using salt as this could block the drainage system.
